You took the course. You land in Rio. And you understand… nada. Because Cariocas don’t talk like a textbook – they talk in gírias: fast, loose street slang no class ever taught you. NãoEntendi is the app that fixes exactly that.

The problem
Textbook Portuguese gets you through the airport. Then someone at the beach kiosk opens their mouth – and it’s a different language. That feeling has a name: “Não entendi” (“I didn’t get that”). It was the founder’s most-used sentence in his first year in Rio.
“Vamos à praia?”
Technically correct. Nobody says it like that.
“Partiu praia?”
What your new Carioca friends actually say.
“Muito obrigado, meu amigo.”
Polite. Also: instantly marks you as a gringo.
“Valeu, irmão!”
Two words, and you sound like you live there.
The proof
Every gíria comes with pronunciation, a real example sentence, the situation where you’ll hear it, and a memory trick so it sticks. Here’s a taste:
partiu
par-CHEW
Let’s go! / Shall we?
“Partiu praia?”
“Beach time?”
mó
MAW
Super [+ word]
“Mó calor hoje, mermão!”
“So hot today, man!”
galera
ga-LEH-ra
The crew / People
“A galera toda vai pra praia hoje!”
“The whole crew is going to the beach today!”
suave
su-AH-vee
Smooth / Easy
“Fica suave, vai dar certo.”
“Stay easy, it will work out.”
valeu
Thanks / See ya
“Valeu pela ajuda, irmão!”
“Thanks for the help, bro!”
grana
Cash, money
“Tô sem grana esse mês.”
“I’m out of cash this month.”
How it works
NãoEntendi guides you word by word instead of dumping a list on you: chapters of 7 gírias, short lessons that show each new word before quizzing it, and spaced-repetition reviews that bring a word back right when you’d forget it. Pass a quick chapter test to move up. Speed rounds, matching games and stories all feed the same progress – and streaks and XP keep you coming back. The interface speaks English and German; real Carioca audio is in the works.

Climb from Gringo to Carioca
Built by someone who lived the problem. Nicola is a Swiss guy who moved to Rio and understood nothing – “não entendi” was his most-used sentence. Every gíria in here was collected on the street, one confusing conversation at a time. This is the app he wishes he’d had.
No fake reviews here – the app isn’t even out yet. Judge the words above instead. 🤙

Questions
We’re in the final stretch before the App Store and Google Play release. Waitlist members get the launch email first – and the free 100-gírias PDF right away.
100 gírias, the quiz and the speed game are free forever. A Pro version unlocks all 2,212 gírias, every situation and all game modes. Pricing will be announced in the app stores at launch.
The app interface is available in English and German. The gírias themselves are Brazilian Portuguese – that’s the point. 🤙 More interface languages are planned.
Real Carioca audio recordings are in preparation with a native speaker from Rio. Until then, every gíria has a written pronunciation guide.
Both. If you already speak some Portuguese, gírias are the missing layer between “correct” and “local”. If you’re starting out, the app teaches survival slang first – the words you’ll hear on day one.
